In many of today's internal combustion engines, the valvetrain system is the limiting factor in the technical feasibility of achieving better engine performance. Described will be the state-of-the-art in current European valvetrain design and the fundamental features of chilled cast iron (CCI) and its characteristics, followed by material specifications and the mechanical and tribological properties of this special cast material. Also discussed will be the stress distributions and lubrication conditions in the cam lobe and cam follower contact area and the successful application of CCI in engine valvetrain components. Moreover, comparisons of mechanical properties, and production costs will be made with alternatives such as remelt hardening using TIG, Laser and EB processes and composite camshafts using PM or stamped steel lobes. Experience with the use of CCI in existing valvetrain will also be mentioned.
