This Paper presents a comparison between a traditional manual transmission vehicle and the same vehicle having the transmission automated. Both the clutch and manual transmission operations are automated, eliminating the clutch pedal and modifying the shift lever. After an overview of the automated system, a comparison is provided, encompassing shift times, torque, engine rpm, clutch actuation and vehicle acceleration as perceived by the driver and a passenger. Main outcome is that the automation of a manual transmission provides similar shift parameters, like shift time and vehicle acceleration interruption. A passenger perceives the gearshifts as similar or better on the automated system. The driver tends to rate the traditional manual as better (if not adapted to the system), due to subjective matters like gearshift taking the driver by surprise, or lack of occupation during gearshift, which can give the impression of a longer shift time.
