The Dept. of the Army’s requirements for high strength steel castings are reviewed. The requirements have influenced research by directing effort into the fields of melting, refining, and solidification. Experiments on melting and refining have emphasized methods of obtaining low sulfur content to improve mechanical properties. Such work has led to the preparation of a new military specification for high strength steel castings. More recent studies, centered on solidification research, have involved the use of the electron beam microprobe to determine distribution of microsegregation.. It is anticipated that this effort, combined with other studies on the effect of microporosity and nonmetallic inclusions, will lead to further mechanical property improvements and the preparation of an additional specification for high strength steel castings at the 250,000 psi yield strength level.
