Our latest research efforts in the area of internal automatic transmission gaskets have focused on techniques to quantify the property of erosion resistance and techniques to verify the performance of integral filter gaskets. This paper starts with a discussion of the erosive forces acting on a typical valve body gasket. Testing techniques which have been used in the past are discussed, along with a description of failure modes seen in the field. New measurement techniques - which provide more detailed erosion data - are introduced, and the results from testing both current products and new products with these new techniques are presented. Recent applications of integral filter gaskets - which are designed to protect solenoid bodies from contamination - are discussed, along with new testing techniques for evaluating the effects of ATF immersion on filter gaskets. The results from testing several filter medias with these new techniques are presented.
