Recovery of energy normally lost in engine exhaust is an attractive way to increase overall engine efficiency. A turbo-hydraulic exhaust power recovery system offers high efficiency, high reliability and low overall system cost. Prime applications would be heavy-duty turbo-diesels with a displacement of 6 liters and above.Based on years of operational experience with hydraulic turbine driven supercharging (H/S) systems, described in Ref. 1, 2 and 3, Kapich Engineering has studied a novel turbo-hydraulic exhaust power recovery system. The conclusion is that such system is economical and practical.Potential for improving the net fuel consumption of heavy-duty turbo-diesel vehicles is estimated to be as high as 10%.
