A fast response flame-ionization-detector (FID) together with an opacity meter were used to allow measurement of the transient particulate emissions from a turbocharged six-cylinder DI diesel engine based on a derived steady-state correlation between particulates, smoke and unburnt hydrocarbons over a range of loads and speeds. The accuracy of the method was evaluated by comparing the integrated average particulate concentration over the transient testing period with measurements using gravimetric filtration in a dilution mini-tunnel; the agreement was in all cases better than 80%.
