While current generation displays usually present only the raw data of the underlying system, benefits may result from processing these data into parameters that are more closely related to the user's task. Closely coupled to this is the form in which this information is presented. Traditional forms of presentation are normally a direct representation of the data. By providing information in a form that is more easily assimilated and understood, a reduction in human error and cognitive workload may be obtained. The intent of this study was to define and validate a display design process that was oriented on the user's task. An aircraft engine display was developed as an example of this concept. This display was evaluated against a functionally similar, traditional display. The results of this evaluation showed a significant users’ preference and an increased error detection capability with the task-oriented display.
