Dura Automotive Systems Inc. has worked to develop new and improved technologies and production applications to meet a variety of challenges. There is increasing demand in our industry for new automotive design and styling of smooth, aerodynamic exterior window surfaces, while meeting new ergonomic installation requirements. In addition, the ever-present need to reduce costs in both the design and assembly operations remains a priority. Adhesive bonding of window assemblies has been used in the automotive industry for some time [1]. Recent development work by Dura Automotive Systems Inc. includes improvements to the processing, design and adhesion of moveable quarter windows, rear lift glass assemblies, rear quarter drop glass, and fixed vent assemblies with division bars. Technological advancements have also been realized in pre-priming rear sliding windows and fixed quarter windows with the elimination of traditional t-stud attachment requirements. This paper will discuss the evolution of these processes from the analysis of market demands, through the development of the enabling technologies, to the establishment of performance expectations and cost savings potential.
