The objective of this paper is to present recent research on the use of a Reynolds Stress Closure Model (RSCM) for a Lean Direct Injection (LDI) combustor. The paper intends to show the motivations for using the LDI combustor and a RSCM. It also aims to describe the implementation of the RSCM into the KIVA-3V computer code and to provide comparisons between the RSCM results, κ-ε turbulance model results, and experimental data for chemically nonreactive flows. The results show that the RSCM can provide predictions in favorable agreement with the experimental data and that the RSCM can predict recirculations and high velocity gradients better than the κ-ε turbulence model can predict. The results also indicated that the choice of swirler has a significant influence on the combustor flow field.
