As today's CPUs are getting more powerful and prices are falling customers expect driver information systems (DIS) with advanced multimedia capabilities no longer to be a privilege of luxury cars but also in mass market vehicles. The complexity of current DIS skyrocketed but the conventional processes and tools are still in use and are not always suitable to the changed situation. We will provide an overview of former human machine interface (HMI) development processes and their disadvantages. The goal is to have an optimized HMI development process and the required key features are identified while stepping through the process from the first design to rapid prototyping, specification, implementation, automated testing and field diagnosis. This leads us to the model based HMI specification, discussed in both the OEM- and the supplier perspective.
