Significant performance developments in most design phases of off-road tires have been made during the past twenty-five years. These advancements have been both chemical and mechanical in nature, with improved compounds, better reinforcements, and new mechanical combinations of shape, construction, and materials. In 1935, Charles F. Kettering said, “The automobile industry isn't simply the product of a single large industry, it is the product of many industries. It moves ahead as a result of new discoveries and developments in the rubber industry.” This paper reflects upon some of these developments relative to the earthmoving equipment sector of the automotive industry.
