Abstract An earlier algorithm for multiple sensors is extended to provide three-axis attitude from multiple line-of-sight observations with a single optical sensor, typically a star camera. The algorithm, called SCAD, is simpler conceptually than either the QUEST, FOAM, or ESOQ algorithms and, although suboptimal, suffers only imperceptible loss of accuracy for typical star cameras with limited fields of view. A complete covariance analysis using the QUEST measurement model is presented.
