Abstract A lifting probe with moveable attachment point is applied to the traditional tether aerobraking maneuver. An active control algorithm is included which uses the probe attitude to regulate tether tension, which is directly related to orbiter deceleration. Tether cutting strategies are examined to achieve the minimum orbiter eccentricity without mission failure. The effects of trajectory perturbations and uncertainties, which can have a significant effect on the success of the maneuver, are examined. Results indicate that the lifting probe control algorithm improves the performance of the aerobraking tether and reduces the effects of parametric uncertainties.
