Abstract Survival in rollovers requires occupant compartment integrity and good restraint performance (including use of effective reminders) to prevent ejection and to protect an occupant's head and neck. We provide a discussion of why roof strength is critical to survival and present the results of a recent series of quasi-static tests of roof strength. We then propose a simple, direct dynamic test of roof strength that can provide critical new data on roof performance.
