Change. A simple word that invokes fear and angst because of the unknowns. But change is a critical component of everything that we do; in many instances, it is subtle and goes unnoticed. When it is noticed, however, the results are positive and result in forward momentum and improvement. Over the past 20 years -- from the author's first service on the ITE International Board of Direction in the mid-nineties to his return to the Board first as an interested potential candidate, then as a candidate, and then as an International Officer and Executive Committee member -- he has seen and experienced a wide range of change associated with public involvement, and the strengthening of other transportation related organizations that filled a niche outside ITE. Changes in my professional career have been profound. He looks back and recall hand-calculating signal timings using probability curves on vehicle arrival rates by cycle, and doing level of service analysis using nomographs developed in response to the 1965 Highway Capacity Manual.
