According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 35,092 people lost their lives in crashes on US roadways in 2015, an increase of 7.2% compared to 32,744 fatalities in 2014, and the largest increase in nearly 50 years. Additionally, an estimated 2.44 million people were injured on U.S. roadways in 2015, up from 2.34 million in 2014. Another NHTSA publication reported that, based on the National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Survey conducted from 2005 to 2007, "driver" was the critical reason cited in an estimated 94% of crashes. Critical reason is defined as the "immediate reason for the critical pre-crash event and is oft en the last failure in the causal chain of events leading up to the crash." As part of the transportation community, AAA Foundation will continue to devote resources to carry out research and recommend solutions to enhance traffic safety. Preventing crashes, injuries, and deaths on our roads requires a multidisciplinary approach including but not limited to education, enforcement, and engineering.
