One of the typical intersection improvements is to add more turn lanes, which results in a wider intersection. The wide intersection will increase pedestrian crossing time and crossing distance, thus potentially reducing pedestrian safety. It also requires a longer signal phasing clearance time (all red interval), and a longer pedestrian crossing time requires a longer signal phase associated with the crossing. These two requirements may reduce the operational efficiency of the intersection. This paper introduces a new and unconventional intersection -- the stretched intersection. This intersection design allows turning traffic to discharge from the intersection via one or more through lane segments besides the dedicated turn lane to double or even triple the turning capacity. It also reduces the startup delay of the through traffic and compresses the headways between vehicles. An unconventional intersection -- the stretched intersection -- is presented in this paper. The through movement traffic is stopped a distance away from an intersection at a red light by a presignal.
