Public health professionals work to assure that conditions and environments are supportive of healthy lifestyles and provide opportunities for all to achieve the highest level of health. Transportation figures prominently in supporting the health of the public. On one hand, transportation, including accessible biking and walking infrastructure, can support active lifestyles that reduce the risk of major chronic diseases. On the other hand, people living near major roadways -- disproportionately those in low-income communities or communities of color -- have increased exposure to traffic-related air pollution, which can exacerbate asthma and increase risk of cardiovascular disease. Overall, the connections between public health and transportation systems are complex and require broad, multidisciplinary collaboration to address health inequities. The transportation and public health sector must work together with communities to create equitable transportation policies that benefit the public's health.
