The traffic engineering profession has embraced SXGs, asserting that SXGs provide an improvement in both real and perceived safety at crossings, and along with increased enforcement, crossing guards are one of the best measures for child pedestrian safety. Until recently, there were no studies evaluating the effect of SXGs on children's safety or behavior. This article presents a case study of a vehicle-pedestrian crash involving an elementary school-aged child crossing an arterial road at a location that was protected by an adult SXG. The case study is used to illustrate the safety impacts of setting appropriate duty times, and as a springboard for the real purpose of the paper, which is to examine the practices and procedures used to set SXG duty times. The analysis consisted of a review of the technical literature on SXGs and a small-scale survey of municipal jurisdictions. A discussion on the results of the analysis is offered, with the intent of identifying guiding principles for SXG duty times.
