Five years ago, when the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) retired the space shuttle fleet and shipped the orbiters to museums across the nation, it seemed that the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) had lost its raison d'etre. By the time Atlantis returned from the 135th and final shuttle mission in Jul 2011, KSC's government and contractor workforce had already shrunk to 8,000, from a high of 16,000 in the mid-1990s. Here, Williamson determines whether the NASA's Kennedy Space Center could recapture the magic of the Apollo and space shuttle eras.
