Specialized missions require specialized aircraft, and designing a custom unmanned aircraft can be expensive and time consuming. Engineers at the John Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) are working to solve that problem by 3-D printing aircraft to meet customers' needs. APL engineers demonstrated the technique by additively manufacturing an unmanned aircraft out of plastic and flying it in an unusual way. The 6-kilogram Corrosion Resistant Aerial Covert Unmanned Nautical System, or CRACUNS, rose from the bottom of a flooded quarry, and took off, carrying a GoPro camera to demonstrate low-altitude surveillance.
