In September 2015, the ITE President's Study Tour to Australia and New Zealand culminated with a humbling and inspirational visit to Christchurch in the Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island to view the ongoing recovery efforts from the city's devastating earthquake on Feb 22, 2011. This earthquake, which registered 6.3 on the Richter scale, had followed a magnitude 7.1 earthquake in the Canterbury region in September 2010 that had already damaged and weakened a large number of the city's buildings and its above- and below-ground infrastructure. When the approximately 10-second quake took place near the epicenter of Christchurch in 2011 at 12:51 PM local time, it caused rock falls, landslips, extensive liquefaction in residential and suburban areas, as well as major damage to buildings, homes, and infrastructure. One hundred and eighty-five people lost their lives, and several thousand people were injured, making it one of New Zealands worst natural disasters.
