Recent research studies have indicated that the start of combustion and the combustion duration of dual-fuel homogeneous charge compression ignition engines can be controlled by the pilot fuel quantity, and the desired engine torque is adjusted via the fuel quantity injected per cycle. In this investigation, energy and exergy analyses were carried out for a dual-fuel engine fuelled with a mixture of diesel (the pilot fuel) and natural gas for four different quantities of injected diesel fuel. The energy analysis is performed during a closed cycle using a three-dimensional model, and combustion modelling was carried out by the three-zone extended coherent-flame model. For the exergy analysis, an in-house computational code is developed, which uses the results of the energy and combustion analyses at different pilot fuel quantities. The results reveal that, when the pilot fuel quantity increases, the exergy efficiency decreases by increasing the exergy destroyed. Also, the second-law performance of the engine decreases in spite of the increase in the work exergy.
