Lexington, KY may be poised to join the ranks of US cities looking to Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) as a cost-effective technique to reduce traffic congestion and increase transit ridership. Located in Fayette County, Lexington is the state's second largest city, with a population of nearly 300,000. Lexington's street pattern is heavily radial. Traffic relies on a network of major arterials that converge on downtown from several directions. Because road widening options are severely limited, Lexington and Fayette County are looking to public transit, among other options, to help relieve congestion by providing additional capacity and a viable alternative to single occupant auto travel, and possibly help influence Lexington's urban form to further encourage alternative modes. Consequently, the BRT concept would offer a more premium type of transit service than what currently exists, including more travel transit travel time savings and reliability and faster travel speeds. It would also offer opportunities for transit oriented development and/or redevelopment.
