Transportation network companies (TNC) are the most disruptive innovation to face the transportation industry in a generation. Uber and Lyft are perhaps the best known, but many others exist, and they all generally exist in a gay space between technology companies and the taxi industry. Insurance is the stickiest issue surrounding TNCs. There are seemingly endless other issues facing TNCs and other innovative mobility services that do not fit neatly into existing transportation infrastructure. Surge pricing, in which prices rise during times when demand for rides exceeds the supply of drivers, is one example. These issues, and many others, will be the focus of regulatory attention in upcoming years as these companies continue to expand and become more ingrained in daily life in cities around the world.
