Located along the Arabian Gulf, UAE is comprised of seven Emirates, with the capital, Abu Dhabi, being the largest and the national seat of government. The Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council (UPC), the strategic planning agency for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, recently launched an update to the Urban Street Design Manual (USDM) to create more walkable and liveable communities and to enhance safety for the more vulnerable road users. The USDM is part of a suite of UPC regulations, guidelines, and policies that help to support the realization of Abu Dhabi Vision 2030. To complement the USDM and allow more users to familiarize themselves with the new standards, an innovative Online Design Tool was developed in Arabic and English. This tool is a free and easily accessible Web-based application hosted on the UPC website, which allows both experts and novices to quickly make basic design decisions on the composition of typical street plans and cross-sections.
