People hear the term "hack" everywhere these days as the Tech World meets the Real World, and they see "apps" for everything imaginable. They are being encouraged to break things. To disrupt. On what's the "hack" analogy in the author's Transportation Planning and Engineering realm, they would argue it is the movement toward Interim Design and Tactical Urbanism, where they build it first, test it second -- planning by proof of concept rather than output of models. Developed by the National Association of City Transportation Officials, interim design (including installation and impacts analysis) is part of the planning outreach process that informs a final design. Although often used interchangeably, tactical urbanism is distinct from interim design in two ways: it typically comes much sooner in the project, and it can be a final project that need not be only interim.
