Continued population and economic growth in Australia, while the latter is now slowing, has meant that demand for transport in Australia has continued to grow over recent years, while central and state government budgets are struggling to keep up with this demand. A continuing shift towards public and active transport in both Australia and New Zealand also continues, and many of the high-frequency suburban rail systems around Australia face capacity constraints that will require major investment to overcome. Construction of urban motorways/ freeways continues, but with increased use of both tunneling and tolls.
