Engineers from DARPA and Lockheed Martin Skunk Works plan to fly an unusual prototype cargo carrier later this 2015, one whose roots can be traced to the bloodiest days of the wars sparked by the 2001 terror attacks. Most aircraft that take off and land vertically have tails with rotor blades to counteract the main blade's torque, or as in the case of the V-22 tiltrotor, a tail with multiple flight surfaces to keep the plane stable in forward flight. The Aerial Reconfigurable Embedded System (ARES) won't have a tail of any kind. That was Lockheed Martin's solution to a challenge from the DARPA in 2013: Make a robotic aircraft that could squeeze into tight spaces without having whirling blades or long tails endanger troops.
