Reliability, availability, maintainability and safety (RAMS) of head-hardened rails - RAMS is an acronym formed from the first letters of the words Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety. While safety has always been the biggest concern of railways, the other three factors are becoming more and more important, in order to make railway infrastructure economically more efficient. Based on a practical example, in this article, the effectiveness of head-hardened rail steels on RAMS key figures is described, and compared to that of regular non heat-treated rail steels.
