The Apollo and Luna missions to the Moon in the 1960s and 1970s unambiguously established that the Moon is useful, interesting, and attainable. Starting with the Clementine mission in 1994, Moon has been the focus of a new series of increasingly ambitious science and exploration missions from many nations. In 2025, it is expected that the Artemis III mission will be the first human landing on the Moon in the 21st Century, eventually leading to the establishment of a field station at the lunar south pole. In the United States, lunar missions have been guided by a series of community documents that established lunar science and exploration objectives. In this talk, I will summarize the long-established science goals of US lunar exploration missions as expressed in foundational community documents and the processes used to establish these science goals.
