Often described as the successor to the Hubble Space Telescope, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a general astrophysics mission that will be used by the international astronomy community in a manner similar to other major space observatories: HST, Chandra, and Spitzer. The JWST is being developed by NASA in partnership with the European and Canadian Space Agencies for launch during 2013.
