Preliminary studies of steep instrument approaches have been conducted with three conventional aircraft. Six-degree approach paths were found to be acceptable. A margin of 3 deg to 4 deg in maximum glide slope was available to allow for flight-path corrections. Control of the lateral-directional axis was the most difficult problem for pilots making either steep or conventional approaches; split-axis control reduced the pilot workload during this operation.
