The X-ray observatory Advanced Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics (ASCA) (Astro-D) was launched in Feb 1993 and is now providing excellent spectro-imaging observations of objects from virtually every astronomical class. This paper reviews the scientific capabilities of ASCA using some of the first results from X-ray binaries, cataclysmic variables, and stars.
