Developed to protect proposed aerospacecraft like Aeroassisted Space Transfer Vehicle and National Aerospace Plane, exposed to temperatures higher than those on surface of Space Shuttle during reentry into atmosphere of Earth. Also useful as furnace insulation and in firefighters' clothing. Sewing threads made of silicon carbide yarn essential components of blankets.
