The paper discusses major objectives and the primary components of the Earth Observing System (EOS), an integrated scientific observing system which will carry out remote sensing measurements for at least 15 years, providing comprehensive data andinformation in support of NASA's Mission to Planet Earth and the international Global Change Research Program. Particular attention is given to the functions of 18 instruments selected for EOS for the definition-phase investigations and to the mission profile.
