Space-based instrumentation calibration for long duration and remote space missions is discussed. The traditional approach, in which instrumentation was an afterthought in the space program design process and calibration was not even addressed until after design was completed, are discussed. Current issues and approaches to calibration are discussed, and guidelines are developed to instrumentation calibration for the Space Station Freedom and beyond.
