Proposed system combines microwave-instrument measurement of vertical temperature gradient with inertial navigation-system measurement of wind vector and provides warnings about time and severity of upcoming clear air turbulence (CAT), and indicates how to avoid it. Also saves fuel by making it unnecessary to detour around regions conservative forecasts indicate might contain CAT, instead, one navigates more efficiently by following altitude-avoidance advisories of proposed instrument.
