A model for the energy generation in accreting compact sources is presented based on (quasi) spherical accretion and a shock as a means for randomizing the inflowing kinetic energy. According to the model, most of the accretion energy is converted into relativistic protons at the shock (via the first order Fermi acceleration mechanism) which in turn can provide the necessary pressure to to self-consistently support it. The shock also provides the relativistic electrons needed to produce the observed radiation as secondaries of the nuclear collisions of the relativistic protons.
