Preliminary studies of a Pioneer-class Mars-orbiter climatology mission are reviewed. The mission requirements and objectives are discussed, as are the program requirements, a mission profile, possible spacecraft designs, payload options, and mission costs. It is shown that existing earth-orbiting communication satellites can be adapted for the climatology mission and that the overall baseline cost should be between $133 million and &168 million in 1982 dollars.
