The paper presents a method for designing laminated plates with orthotropic layers under uniaxial and biaxial compression. The objective is to find the fiber direction of all the layers that give the highest buckling stress; therefore, it is necessary to solve an unconstrained maximization problem. The optimization technique used is Powell's conjugate direction method. Numerical calculations were made for plates with three, four, and six layers.
