The evolution of the Space Shuttle System using an expendable External Tank was discussed. The reasoning for the cryogenic propellant selection for the Space Shuttle Main Engine was addressed. The unique problems, solutions, and design features imposed on the External Tank by the cryogenic propellants was discussed with special emphasis on the use of cryogenic insulation for aerodynamic heating protection. Manufacturing techniques for high production rate cryogenic tankage concluded the report.
