The early phases of space processing are related to science demonstrations on Apollo 14 and Apollo 16 in 1971, low gravity processing on Skylab in 1974, and processing experiments in connection with the Apollo-Soyuz mission in 1975. A description of a space processing applications rocket program is also presented and questions concerning the potential impact of space processing are investigated. Starting in 1979, the Space Shuttle and Spacelab will provide a manned laboratory for more extensive scientific experiments concerning the feasibility of materials processing in a space environment and the advantages of such processing procedures compared to conventional ground-based methods.
