Traffic flow on crowded highways may be increased by reducing the spacing or headway between adjacent vehicles. This may be safely done either by using an automatic longitudinal control system in individual vehicles, or by improving the driver-vehicle system. The second approach is discussed in this paper; namely, the use of a modified manual control unit for greatly improved car-following performance.
