In response to Navy requirements for a craft capable of operations in areas normally inaccessible to boats, the Naval Ship Systems Command has inititated a development program to design, construct, test and evaluate a relatively new craft concept. This somewhat radical craft by boat standards, with its unique capabilities, suggests a real threat to those enemies located in inshore areas, of swamps, rice paddies, tidal flats and even snow. Termed the Riverine Utility Craft (RUC), this simple zero draft craft, using the Archimedian screw principle, has been designed to perform missions of: surveillance and reconnaissance, patrol, blocking, and interdiction; medical evacuation; transport of troops and supplies; minesweeping; and light gun fire support.
