Twenty years have passed since the first four wheel anti-lock brake system was launched in volume production by Chrysler in 1971. Although there was a setback around mid 70's due to the unsatisfactory performance of the early products, and the negative aftertaste of premature introduction of FMVSS 121, the evolution has not been stopped, and the field experience has been gained continuously. It has been proven that a well developed system can perform required functions satisfactorily. Marketability and customer reaction also confirm positively. There is no doubt that ABS is a significant contribution towards active safety, and it is now getting more and more popular, not only limited to upper class cars, but also in medium range and compact cars. The authors can expect objectively that the market penetration will soon reach an even higher percentage. Based on the latest information, the report attempts to provide an outline of up-to-date development of ABS systems since late 80's, and the future developing trends as well.
