A primary objective of this project was to simulate traffic approaching, passing through and leaving an intersection. In formulating the model's logic, driver, vehicle and environmental characteristics were taken into account, with the primary emphasis on the driver. The driver's perceptual, decision making and response processes were considered in detail. Many variables that affect these processes were included in the model. For example, the geometry of the intersection, weather and road conditions, vehicle characteristics, various speeds, and the type of maneuver (right turn, left turn, straight) being made at the intersection were included. In order to keep the problem to manageable proportions, it was decided to limit the model as follows: (1) The roads are two-lane; (2) Speed limits range from 35-50 mph; (3) No pedestrian traffic; (4) No passing; (5) Daylight conditions; (6) No obstacles (such as buildings, trees, etc.) obstructing the driver's view.
