This report was prepared at the request of the Alliance for Automobile Manufacturers to analyze and assess currently proposed legform surrogates and associated test procedures. The report summarizes recent literature regarding lower extremity protection for pedestrians and includes analysis of lower extremity injury patterns in the Pedestrian Crash Data Study (PCDS) database. Additional analysis of overall injury patterns in the PCDS database as they relate to vehicle categories was also performed. The report has five main sections: injury patterns, biomechanical tests, legform surrogates and test procedures, testing issues, and observations and recommendations.
