Transportation Technology Center, Inc., a subsidiary of the Association of American Railroads, is conducting a research project titled, 'Damage Assessment of Tank Cars Involved in Accidents.' Phase I of the project evaluated the validity of guidelines currently used to assess the severity of damage to pressure tank cars caused by derailments. A search of the technical literature was performed and subsequently evaluated to identify which of the guidelines can be validated and which require additional modeling and validation in the Phase II effort. This report and accompanying appendix present the results of the literature search and evaluation and make recommendations for the Phase II research.
