The study of traffic crash statistics is an important part of the AMATS transportation planning process. Such studies can identify traffic safety needs and lead to improvements of both the safety and level of service provided by the highway transportation system. Crash studies can also be used to monitor or analyze the safety effects of highway improvements, changes in highway operation or traffic flow. The purpose of this memorandum is to summarize highway crashes that occurred in the AMATS area during the years 1997, 1998 and 1999, identify highway sections with high crash rates, and provide a regional ranking of highway sections. This regional ranking is based on the number of crashes, crash rate (crashes per mile and per million vehicle miles of travel) and severity of crashes at each highway section. This Memorandum consists of four sections. Section two reviews the source of data used. The next section describes the methodology used to develop the regional ranking. The last section summarizes this analysis.
